Auto Tune-Up in Fremont, CA

Welcome to Fremont Auto Center, a family owned auto repair shop that provides full car care, including Fremont tune-up service.

If you drive an older vehicle, tune-up can be quite an involved affair. If you drive a newer vehicle, they are full of sensors and computers and are “self-tuning” to a large degree. You will still have to get spark plugs replaced from time to time, but newer vehicles need a lot less “tuning”.

In the olden day some shops would make a distinction between a minor tune-up, and a major tune-up. Inspections would be a big part of a minor tune-up: belts, wires, hoses, check for oil leaks, coolant leaks, or vacuum leaks, fuel filter and air filter replacement, and if necessary, ignition timing adjustment as well as spark plugs replacement.

A major tune-up covered everything that a minor tune-up did, as well as transmission fluid replacement, fuel pump replacement, and replacement of various sensors – crankshaft position sensor, cam position sensor, and potentially a number of other sensors and check of systems interacting with these sensors.

Modern vehicles, on the other hand, do a lot of “tuning” in real time. The on-board computer monitors input from a wide range of sensors, and adjusts parameters in real time, for example, it can adjust how much air goes into the air-fuel mix, and based on that information can calculate emissions. If it sees a problem, it will try to correct it. Sometimes things get so far out of equilibrium that the computer cannot compensate for the difference – that’s when it will illuminate the dreaded “check engine light”. This light indicates that a professional mechanic needs to evaluate the problem and create a solution. The good news is that the check engine light warns the driver of a problem in the early stages, thus giving the owner an opportunity to have the vehicle inspected and repaired before further damage occurs. And yes, during the tune-up we still look for leaks (oil leaks, transmission fluid leaks, coolant leaks, power steering fluid leaks), we check belts, hoses, and if needed, replace fuel pump, spark plugs, and the water pump.
