When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder causes a caliper (which holds the brake pads just outside the rotor) to press the brake pads to the rotor. The friction generated by pads pressing on the rotor causes the vehicle to slow down, and eventually to stop.
Depending on where and how you drive, and depending on how heavy is your vehicle, brake pads will wear out at a different rate. It is important to replace the brake pads before they wear out completely – both because of your safety, but also because “metal to metal” braking causes damage to the rotors – at this point in addition to brake pad replacement you will also need to pay for rotor replacement – this can more than double the cost of brake repair.
At some point brake calipers will need to be replaced as well. With age piston seal becomes hard and loses elasticity, which can lead to brake fluid leaks. Calipers are typically replaced in pairs, either front axle or rear axle. Corrosion of pistons or piston bore may also contribute to brake fluid leaks.
